Surat At Taubah (Arabic: سورة التوبة) is the ninth chapter (surah) of the Quran, with 129 verses (ayat). It is a Medinan surah, meaning that it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) after his migration to Medina.
The surah is also known as "Bara'ah" (meaning "disavowal" or "renunciation"), as the opening verses renounce certain agreements made with non-Muslim tribes, particularly the Banu Qaynuqa, Banu Nadir, and Banu Qurayza, who had broken their treaties and engaged in treacherous behavior.
The surah also emphasizes the importance of sincere repentance and turning towards Allah, and highlights the significance of charity, prayer, and obedience to Allah and his Messenger. It also discusses various aspects of warfare, including the obligation of fighting in defense of Islam and the rules of engagement with the enemy.
Surat At Taubah is the only surah in the Quran that does not begin with the basmala ("In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful") and is considered to be one of the most powerful surahs in the Quran due to its emphasis on repentance and the consequences of disobedience.
